Atkinson Bailey Consultants Ltd was formed in 1999 when Malcolm Bailey took early retirement from his position as Head of Small Business in Barclays Bank Manchester. Malcolm felt that with the changing world of banking, the days of a Bank Manager to whom small business proprietors could turn for impartial advice were over. Malcolm had been a branch manager in the early nineties of two branches that closed down under the bank restructuring process. During that time he had built up a good relationship with business customers who came to rely on his impartial opinions about their businesses.

Having taken early retirement in 1999 he set up Atkinson Bailey Consultants Ltd to provide a mentoring service to proprietors of growing businesses that had not yet appointed a financial director.

He believes that to be successful the managing director or proprietor of a business must have the ability to assess how the business is progressing relative to its ambitions and the market in which it operates. He considers that the best way of doing this is, from time to time, to work on the business not in the business. By acting as a mentor and bringing his 25 years of experience as a lending bank manager, Malcolm believes he does add a further dimension to his clients enabling them to look at the business from a more focussed financial point of view.

He has developed various diagnostic tools to assess a business financial strength and the adequacy of its working capital and once he has got to know the business he makes monthly visits to check up on the progress and direction the business is taking.
